This Rocking Tire Chair made with reclaimed tires is one of the biggest jobs of artist Rodney Allen Trice. Getting this piece done is no easy task and is a clear example of how upcycled furniture can also become sustainable art. This chair made with reclaimed tires is exclusively made on-demand and no two pieces are the same.
It utilizes one of the biggest waste problems that the motor industry has created, and without which it would be completely dead, the tires. Over 240 million tires are thrown away in the United States only. One by one, or two by two we should say, Rodney Allen Trice is bringing a solution for everyone to enjoy.
The first step requires finding two tires that have been worn close enough to equally balance the tire chair. Once that not so easy task is done, comes the cleaning and scrubbing. It takes around one week to get the surface of the reclaimed tires perfectly clean, conditioned and ready. The smooth result imitates worn leather and doesn’t wear off on anything.
Once the tires have been selected and prepared, chromed steel rods are measured and cut. Adjusting the frame is a key step in the building of this tire chair. A lot of measuring, cutting and measuring again is involved. When the frame is finally mounted, rubber inner tubes are stripped and stretched. They are then interlaced one with another to create the whole shape of the chair, sitting comfortably between the two tires, which serve as armrests.
Usually the whole piece needs to be taken apart and put together at least 2 times to make sure everything is in place and that it all fits perfectly. A mammoth job that always gets its payback when people sit on it. You might not believe it, but the comfort of this chair is quite surprising.
It’s no surprise why Rodney Allen Trice is so proud of this piece, hence its original rockstar name: El Rocker de las llantas muertas (The rocker of dead tires).
