This bottle cap painting is a modern day replica of one of the most iconic portraits of David Bowie. The original picture was taken by Brian Duffy for the album Aladdin Sane in 1973. The piece creates a perspective distortion. When looked from up close the full portrait becomes undefined and all we can see are randomly positioned bottle caps. When looked from far away the representation of the popular portrait becomes clear. You can even do the trick trying to squint in front of the painting. The effect creates a fascinating interaction between subject and matter. Go on, try it! See?

This Bottle Cap Painting by Mike Valle is an all time favorite. After the death of David Bowie in the early 2016, Mike Valle was inspired to create a piece in memoriam. It isn’t difficult to find portraits of the late ‘Ziggy Stardust’. Nonetheless, the cover of his 1973 album, Aladdin Sane, is probably the most easily recognizable one. This iconic portrait was originally taken by photographer Brian Duffy. In it, Mr. Bowie appears with a bold red lightning bolt painted across his face.
In words of the artist Mike Valle, “David Bowie was an amazingly inspiring artist, reinventing himself regularly throughout his career, even creating alter egos to convey his different musical styles, he was truly one of kind. Although he changed his sound from album to album, he continued to be true to himself and create the music he wanted the world to hear. Saddened by his passing, I created this piece as a tribute to his musical legacy.”
The bottle cap art pieces of Mike Valle are a playful game for the eye. The Perspective Distortion that they create invites the viewer to play with distances, creating an interaction between subject and matter. From up close, the pieces seem distorted and are not easily defined. When looked from far away, or squinting, the image becomes clear. It reveals the high level of detail that the portraits hide. Do the trick, try squinting while looking at this piece and you will see how the shades of the nose, the mouth and the side of the face begin to reveal.
The David Bowie Bottle Cap Painting is made using nearly 1200 bottle caps from various beer brands that can be found in the United States. After almost 15 years collecting them, Mike Valle began experimenting with Bottle caps around 6 years ago. His experimentation has resulted is an astonishing range of paintings that evoke the principles of Pop Art. Inspired by portraits of popular culture that he replicates, his art pieces resonate with a modern generation that is eager to find a new way of making art.
